Well Living Lab™ Wins Prestigious Edison Award for Collective Disruption
Rochester, MN – The Well Living Lab™ has been awarded the prestigious 2018 Edison Award for collective disruption. Focused on market transformation and pioneering thought leadership, the Edison Awards recognize and honor the world’s best innovations and innovators.
Collective disruption recognizes cutting-edge collaborative models that result in formation of transformative new businesses. The Well Living Lab was honored for the unique joint effort of Delos™ and Mayo Clinic to create a first of its kind scientific center to understand the relationship between indoor environments and health and well-being. Because people spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors, Delos and Mayo Clinic recognized the significance of creating indoor spaces that positively impact health and well-being.
The Well Living Lab relies on a multidisciplinary approach to research, bringing together medicine, behavioral science, building science, environmental engineering and technology to study how buildings and everything in them affect people’s health, performance, sleep, comfort, stress and resiliency. Twenty-three organizations from around the world have joined the Well Living Lab Alliance to catalyze a movement for healthy indoor spaces. The Well Living Lab Scientific Advisory Council with internationally recognized leaders and Mayo Clinic’s Institutional Review Board guide the research activities of the lab.
“It is a tremendous honor to be recognized as an innovative change agent and for our work that ultimately will make important contributions to people’s lives,” says Douglas Wood, M.D., medical director Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation. “We brought together two organizations with different cultures and expertise and have created something new and needed – a research laboratory that is solely focused on understanding the impact of indoor environments on people’s the health and well-being.”
The Edison Awards, named after Thomas Alva Edison, were established in 1987. This year’s awards were conferred Wednesday, April 11, 2018 in New York City. All nominations were reviewed by the Edison Awards Steering Committee and the final ballot sent to an independent judging panel. The judging panel was comprised of more than 3,000 professionals from the fields of product development, design, engineering, science, marketing and education, including professional organizations representing a wide variety of industries and disciplines.
“Receiving this award is one of the highest honors an organization can receive in the name of innovation,” says Peter Scialla, COO of Delos. “It solidifies that what we conceived together with Mayo Clinic is significant for advancing science and knowledge and making a positive contribution to society.”
About the Well Living Lab™
A collaboration of Delos™ and Mayo Clinic, the Well Living Lab is the first human-centered research facility dedicated to identifying how buildings — and everything that goes in them — impacts human health and well-being. The purpose of the Well Living Lab is to study these indoor environments and create healthier indoor spaces in which to work, live and play. The Well Living Lab is unique in that research is conducted on real people, in real-world settings. This is made possible by the revolutionary infrastructure of the Well Living Lab, which features 5,500 square feet of sensor rich, reconfigurable Lab space where researchers can conduct research with human subjects in simulated, real-world, built environments.
